Welcome to the Sanderson Forensics/Digital-Detective "ForensicWiki"

The purpose of this site is to provide a controlled access encyclopaedia created by, maintained by, and for the use of the Computer Forensic Community.

*** Intention to merge with Forensicswiki.org *** We have decided after consultation that it would make sense to merge the forensicwiki with the forensicswiki (www.foreniscswiki.org). Forensicswiki is an open wiki as opposed to the closed wiki here. Anyone who has posted to this wiki who wishes their contributions to remain private should delete their postings in the next 7 days (by 24th July 2008). Once the merge of the wiki's has taken place (this may take a few more weeks) the forensicwiki.com domain will be redirected to www.forensicswiki.org.

IN THE MEAN TIME NO MORE NEW USER REGISTRATIONS WILL BE MADE ON THIS SITE

What is a Wiki? A Wiki is a user maintained encyclopaedia. A Wiki contributor adds a new page or modifies/corrects an existing page, other users review and refine the content until a consensus is reached. As an example if you see a typo, grammatical error or just downright disagree with the contents of any page then change it. Your peers will be able to see your changes and will either agree with them, further enhance the content, or change it back.

Why controlled access? The content of a Wiki is maintained by the user base. If a user disagrees with the content of a web page then he/she is free to edit the page to reflect their view on the subject. Obviously this gives rise to the possibility of a certain amount of abuse, Wiki sites around the world are often hacked/vandalized or defaced by anonymous users. Making the site controlled access allows the administrators to exercise some limited control over who edits the pages. In order to enhance the usability of the site, we have have allowed the uploading of files and images, this is for two reasons:

* it allows users with no web space to host their own images for their posts
* it means that of a remote server goes down or a hosted site is moved then we won't get broken links

obviously in our industry this is begging for trouble and I would guess that the time could be measured in minutes before some bad guy uploaded something illegal, hence the controlled access.

Remember that this is your forum, not ours. Digital Detective and Sanderson Forensics cannot post all of the content, if you don't contribute then it won't work - so lets get those pages up there

What should I contribute?

In short anything that is Computer Forensics related, examples include but are not limited to:

  • Tricks for imaging mobile phones
  • Reviews on forensic software/hardware
  • Got a nice description of a particular artefact for a statement - then cut and paste it in
  • Tricks and tips for examining a particular application
  • Internal procedureal guides - post them and let the community benefit
  • Hard disk drive disassembly/access instructions
  • Do you have a graphic that would enhance an existing article - upload it using the link on the left and add the image to the article
  • Got a half complete article, and no time to complete it, post it and let the community finish it off
  • Details of the file format of a particular application
  • Corrections/enhancements to existing articles

Just remember though (especially if doing a review) that anyone can come along after you have posted your article and change it. A Forensic Wiki SysOp/Administrator can lock an article if you so desire (although we really don't like to do this), if an article is changed then a full change history, and an option to roll back the change is also available.

If you see a typo on a page or just want to add additonal information then go ahead and do it. If you disagree with something then you should click on the discussion tab and explain what it is you disagree with and how you feel that it should be corrected

Please also remember that the idea of a wiki is that the content grows and improves over time, so if you think you can improve some existing content either by the addition of a few lines or by a complete rewrite then do so.
